What this trail can tell us.

This explorer follows a bounded selection of dated correspondence. It does not claim to reconstruct every day or every exchange.

Read the map carefully

A letter sent by Napoleon from one town does not put Davout in that town. The default map uses Davout’s own dated writing places or explicitly sourced positions. The other map view shows where the selected letters were written.

Place coordinates locate towns approximately. Connections are schematic. Modern outlines are a visual reference, not a map of the states or frontiers of 1806.

Read the letters carefully

English summaries and translations are editorial aids. Original passages, edition details and source links let you check the wording. Dates belong to the documents; arrival times and an exchange’s completeness should not be assumed. Each letter identifies whether its passage was checked against the printed edition scan or a web transcription. Original manuscripts have not been checked.
