Repair & Reuse · Question 12

Conflicting reports

How should we reconcile contradictory completion reports before releasing a launch gate?

Hold the gate for the North electrical test station. Match both reports to the same asset, completion criteria and cutoff, then obtain the required dated signed readiness inspection. The photo and checklist disagree; averaging their reliability would conceal the disagreement.

Fictional what-if workspace. Changes stay in this tab and reset on reload; no record is saved and no external system is changed.

The evidence we actually have

Supplied fixture · benchmark 1.0.0 · conflictingReports
RecordClaimSupplied reliabilityWhat is missing
PhotoComplete80%Date, asset identifier on the image, completion criteria, calibration and provenance.
ChecklistIncomplete85%Date, failed items, signatory, calibration and whether it reused the photo.

Supplied prior completion: 50%. Common identity: confirmed in the fixture. Required follow-up: Dated signed readiness inspection for the same identified station.

Case: a fictional two-hub launch in 12 weeks within £240,000, with six cross-trained staff. Schedule or budget pressure does not change the evidence standard. “Complete” here is assumed to mean that this station meets its agreed readiness criteria; the fixture does not provide those criteria or the wider launch-gate authority.

1Match the claim before combining it

Independence concerns errors after conditioning on true completion. Two different formats or authors do not establish independence. If they share a source, trace provenance and identify the primary observation; do not count the same evidence twice.

2Inspect the probability calculation

The supplied “reliability” fields are ambiguous. For this illustration only, each is interpreted as both sensitivity and specificity: an 80% reliable source reports the correct binary state 80% of the time. These are assumed likelihoods, not measured performance.

Editable assumptions: whole percentages from 1 to 99. Endpoints are excluded to avoid claiming certainty. Values below 50 model a systematically misleading source. The original fixture values remain above.

Likelihood of the actual observed claim, given each possible true state
Observed claimP(claim | complete)P(claim | incomplete)Likelihood ratio
Photo says complete0.8000.2004.000
Checklist says incomplete0.1500.8500.176

Using checklist alone
Both, if independent

The single-report posteriors are alternative updates from the same prior, not values to average. “41.4%” is a model output conditional on assumptions; it is not a calibrated safety assurance level or a confidence interval.

3Resolve the contradiction, then refer the gate

  1. Preserve the conflict: retain both original claims, source dates, station identifiers, signatories, evidence links and the particular incomplete items. Do not overwrite one claim with the other.
  2. Reconcile scope and time: establish whether the photo shows installation while the checklist tests readiness, or whether work occurred between reports. A genuine scope or time difference becomes a traceable explanation, not a majority vote.
  3. Perform the required inspection: a competent authorised inspector checks the same station against the agreed readiness criteria, records defects and signs a dated result. Update the current status and explicitly supersede the earlier claim where justified.
  4. Refer the gate: the designated gate authority reviews the inspection and the other launch criteria. A probability threshold alone never authorises release.

This selector invents a what-if outcome; it does not supply an inspection, signature or approval. No numerical likelihood is assigned to the inspection because its calibration is not supplied.

Reconciliation result

Hold · inspection missing

The supplied photo and checklist disagree. Confirm comparable scope and timing, then obtain the dated signed readiness inspection for the North electrical test station.

Initial fixture assessment. No simulated follow-up has been selected.

Result lifecycle: ephemeral scenario in this page only. No readiness record, inspection, file or approval is created. Correct an assumption above and simulate again; Reset restores the supplied values and initial result. Reload discards all changes. There is no saved History or external action to withdraw.

Assumptions, acceptance checks and limits

Acceptance: the prior, observed-claim likelihoods and resulting posterior are visible in step 2. Clearing common identity suppresses joint calculation and forces a hold; selecting shared evidence also refuses fusion. Unknown dependence and missing comparable dates make the combined figure illustrative only.

No release threshold is supplied. This answer therefore does not invent one. Even a high computed probability cannot substitute for the mandatory inspection. A hypothetical signed pass can make this station's package ready for gate review, but it cannot demonstrate the other hub, shared dependencies or overall launch readiness.

Limits: no original photo, checklist, inspection, timestamps, calibration sample or completion definition is available. The binary model omits partial completion and defect severity. A single “reliability” value cannot ordinarily identify both likelihoods. Conditional independence is an additional assumption. Priors must reflect evidence available before these reports, or evidence will be counted twice.
